Hetty Kate

2pm, Saturday October 29 – The Kawai Stage at St Patricks Hall
1pm, Sunday October 30 – Pinsent Hotel (3 sets)

Hetty Kate is one of Australian jazz luminary James Morrison’s favourite singers; has graced stages from New Zealand to New York; released six acclaimed albums; sung for the ever-growing swing-dance community across four continents; and more recently has joined the ABC Jazz stable of vocalists. As comfortable in an intimate jazz club as she is in a concert hall, Hetty has performed at Hamer Hall with the MSO; the Sydney Opera House with the SSO; and has recently returned from singing with James Morrison and the Czech National Symphony Orchestra for the Prague Proms.

Known for her pure tone, straight ahead style and natural musicality, Hetty Kate is often lauded for what she
‘doesn’t do’ as a jazz singer. Her approach keeps true to the melody and lyric, and uses improvisation in a
way which never detracts from the story of the song. It is this rare quality that led Mal Stanley, from ABC
Jazztrack (ABC Jazz Radio) to invite her to record an exclusive album of treasures from the catalogues of
Julie London, Peggy Lee and June Christy in 2013. Titled Dim All The Lights, this was a textural and delicate musical offering which cemented Hetty’s working relationship with some of the best jazz instrumentalists in the country.

For these special festival performances Hetty will sing with an outstanding quintet featuring James Sherlock on guitar and Carl Mackey on saxophone, along with Ben Robertson (bass) and Danny Fischer (Saturday) alternating in the drum seat with Danny Farrugia (Sunday). You can expect a sparkling collection of beautiful songs from her catalogue alongside some new arrangements of songs she fell in love with during her last stay in Paris.
