Jen Shyu / Simon Barker Duo

Jen Shyu is an experimental jazz vocalist, composer, multi-instrumentalist, dancer, and Fulbright scholar. Having sung with Steve Coleman, Mark Dresser, and in Anthony Braxton’s operas, she has produced six albums, the most recent of which, Sounds and Cries of the World, was named by The New York Times as one of the best of 2015. A Stanford University graduate who has researched traditional music in Taiwan, China, Korea and East Timor, Shyu studied Javanese singing (sindhenan) and dance for two years on a Fulbright scholarship in Indonesia, culminating in a solo opera, Solo Rites: Seven Breaths, which premiered in New York in 2014.

Jen will be joined by percussionist Simon Barker, a musician she describes as an inspiration.
