Since her first performance at the Brisbane jazz club when she was 9 years old, Jess Spina has established herself as one of the most sought after vocalists in Brisbane. Her warm and genuine stage presence draws audiences in, making them feel part of every performance. Jess’s musicianship and diligence to her craft is evident in her skilled arrangements, as well as in the freedom and accuracy of her improvisations.
Jess received the Sir Samuel Griffith Scholarship to study a Bachelor of Music majoring in Jazz Voice at the Queensland Conservatorium. During her studies she sang with the Conservatorium’s premier Big Band and toured with the A Cappella Vocal Ensemble. She also sang with the Queensland Youth Orchestra Big Band in 2018. Upon graduating in 2019, she was awarded the Sid SJ Bromley Jazz Award for her academic achievements, leadership skills, and performance abilities in the jazz style.
While her speciality lies in intimate jazz settings, Jess has developed genre-spanning versatility and loves singing everything from RnB to Brazilian, Folk to Jazz Prog. The breadth of her experience as a solo artist ranges from regular local gigs to International festivals. In 2019 she attended the Siena International Jazz Festival in Italy where she worked with renowned musicians including Kenny Werner, Becca Stevens, Miguel Zenon, Henry Cole, Theo Bleckmann and Jen Shyu amongst others. Jess has also cherished performing alongside eminent Australian jazz artists such as Kristin Berardi, Ingrid James, Olivia Chindamo and James Sherlock.
