Maria is a drummer who has been strongly active within the Melbourne improvised music community, performing and collaborating with some of Australia’s most renowned artists. She has performed with The Australian Art Orchestra, Anthony Pateras, Jim Denley, Speak Percussion, Jon Rose, Andrea Keller, James Rushford, The Splinter Orchestra, Krakatau, Lucas Abela, and The Hobart Improvisers Collective, and developed ongoing relationships with organisations such as Liquid Architecture, Tonelist (Perth), Nice Music, and Inland Concert Series.

Maria has studied under some of Australia’s best jazz/improvising drummers, including Simon Barker, Will Guthrie, and Graham Morgan. Her drumming presents a unique approach to the instrument that is expressive, intuitive and graceful, demonstrating a high degree of expertise and discipline.

Maria’s debut EP Mondo Flockard was released in 2016 through Perth label Tonelist, and was listed on Avant Music News under Best Albums of the Year. In 2017 she composed and performed a percussion and electronics score for Ben Christensen’s 1922 film Haxan at Dark Mofo festival in Hobart, Tasmania. Performing on solo drums, Maria has opened for high-profile artists such as Clever Austin (Hiatus Kaiyote), Chris Corsano (Bjork, Thurston Moore, Evan Parker), Oren Ambarchi, and Alex Zhang Hungtai (Dirty Beaches).  Her solo LP Opening was released through Nice Music in January 2019, launched with a sold out performance at Eastmint. Her guitar/drum kit duo with Adam Halliwell has toured nationally and internationally, performing festivals and headline performances throughout Germany, France and Italy in 2015, and performing an Australian tour in April 2018.

Maria is currently the drummer for groundbreaking pop bands/artists Jaala, On Diamond, and Francis Plagne, and has previously drummed for Mildlife, Jess Ribeiro, Sui Zhen, Evelyn Ida Morris, JK Group, and Horatio Luna. This diverse experience has allowed Maria to develop a versatile and unique style, helping her gain recognition as one of Melbourne’s finest improvisers.
